Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Special Inspections

The applicable method – VT, PT, MT, UT or RT – is determined by assessing the discontinuity to be detected, the material, the geometry, access, the surface condition and the acceptance criteria.

Depending on the method, coatings, dirt, grease, rust or surface roughness may affect the inspection. The necessary surface preparation and access conditions shall be determined prior to application.

The report shall include the method and standard, the part or area inspected, staff competence, information on equipment and consumables, inspection conditions, findings, acceptance criteria (if any) and the result.

In order for an assessment to be carried out, applicable and pre-defined acceptance criteria are required. Where no criteria exist, the findings are reported; design or engineering suitability is assessed separately by the authorised technical party.

For NDT to be carried out on work equipment, a TS EN ISO 9712 personnel certificate at least at Level 2, appropriate to the method, is required. The scope of the organisation’s methods and inspection area must be verified in conjunction with the personnel certificate.
